One wave at a time

"Suck in your stomach and fly through this", Kyra told herself as she paddled on her 10 foot long surfboard through the icy blue water towards what seemed to be an emerging wave. Steadying her petite figure just in time to catch the middle of the wave, she held her breath as she glided along effortlessly. "Why did I ever quit surfing?", she thought to herself as she raced towards the shore where her 2 best friends, Lilo and Marie were sleeping on their lazy chairs enjoying the gorgeous Bali sunshine.

Anyone looking at Kyra with her lovely wheatish skin, chocolate brown eyes and scarlett Johansson smile wouldn't have believed that she had gone through an emotional roller coaster ride only a few months ago, that too with death in the passengers seat. Everyone swore that being the fighter that she was got her through early detected breast cancer.

The trip to Bali with her girls was in celebration of this victory. Just after she got here, the 3 of them agreed that the only thing on their agenda for the next 2 weeks was fun. Not that the coast was any stranger to Kyra. She had practically lived on the beach since she was a baby, surfing her way through tiny waves and then moving on to the bigger, tougher waves that even competitive athletes would be scared to tackle and even though it had been years since she's climbed into an ocean because of her job at one of the best law firms in New York, she felt right at home.

With the sun slowly sinking away, they moved on to Jiko's, the local bar right by the beach. With tourist season at its peak and the band playing its best set, the crowd was wild there. As everyone including Lilo and Marie shaked and shimmied to the rhumba, mojitos in hand, Kyra sipped thoughtfully on her passion fruit shake marvelling as the flavors of Bali sank in.

Tomorrow would be the big day, the annual Surfs up competition where only the best showed up and thrashed waves that reached the heights of buildings. Kyras parents had a fit when she told them about her decision to sign up for it but agreed after okaying it with her oncologist Dr Fernandes, who gave her the green signal even though she was still a little weak from the chemo, if she was up just to have a good time and fine with not winning.

So without the pep talk, she would wake up at the crack of dawn with nothing but her surfboard and her Lakme sun expert, pushing her body to heights she never thought were possible until she got back into the true shape and form of the surfer inside her.

On the morning of the competition, after a light breakfast, they set out to the western coastline. A crowd had already worked its way up even though the sun was just beginning to peak up through the horizon. "Whatever happens out there today Kyra", Lilo began, "know that we are so proud of you and how far you've come".

The first few rounds were a piece of cake and she managed to stay in the top 5. Infact, everything was going exactly as Kyra had planned. Unfortunately Mother Nature tipped in a little surprise at the last moment. It was during the final wave, that Kyra, now about 2 miles away from the shore noticed something weird. It almost looked as if the current was swirling in the middle, like a giant black hole waiting to suck anything in its way into the deep blue. She also noted how her competitors No.45 and No.13 weren't aware of what was in store for them and were actually swimming towards it. Just as she felt like her heart would beat out of her chest, no.45 managed to hitch on a wave and ended his session gracely tunneling through it in a classic tube. Unfortunately No.13 was still paddling towards the tornado like formation in the ocean. She cursed her luck as the most beautiful wave started to form just 10m from where she was floating. If there was ever a God, this would be the moment he was testing her - she could surf up this monster of a wave and drive home with a shiny new trophy and an *in your face* look for her parents or she could put aside everything about this vacation and how it was supposed to be about her and save Mr.13.

She almost felt like slapping herself for even thinking that there could be a choice. Ignoring her chance at the top step on the ladder of surfer success, she swam towards No.13, her chances of winning this sinking like he was. By now he was already aware of the trouble he was in and started screaming for help. Using all the training she remembered from her days at camp, Kyra hurled herself into the chaos, throwing her safety rope round Mr.13 and pulled him onto her surf board. Not a minute too soon since Mr.13 collapsed out of a mixture of shock and exhaustion.

With one hand holding onto him and the other paddling both of them back to shore, it was a few moments before everyone realized what was happening and sent for help. Since these incidents were apparently very common during surfing tournaments, no leniency was shown towards Kyra and her heroism and No.45 walked away with the trophy.

For some reason though, none of this bothered her. She had managed to win the biggest battle she had ever come across - death. She knew that it was because of everything she went through that she would be able to live with that courage and determination for the rest of her life, riding it one wave at a time.

The present day 'Tree'

The Internet is fun.

She secretly made an account on a social networking site at the age of 10, made a new friend who she agreed to meet alone. She never returned home.

The Internet is awesome fun.

His girlfriend dumped him for another guy. He couldn't think straight. He went online and 'Googled' ways to poison people without getting caught. A few days later, the girlfriend was found dead in her apartment. They said cause of death was a 'Heart attack'.

Yes, the Internet is fun.

He went through compromising pictures of young girls on the Internet, and paused for a few minutes to admire one particular masked girl. Little did he know he was drooling over the picture of his own daughter.

Still fun, right?

They made a group on a social networking site defaming an unpopular girl who they would routinely rag and claiming she was involved in shady activities. The page got over a thousand views. They never got to see her reaction to all this. She was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her room the next morning.

Starting to sound less fun?

He copied and pasted his entire final year project from the Internet, just to make things easy for him. He was at a loss when he was asked questions about his project for the final exams. Needless to say, he cleared the same exam only 6 months later.

Fun, fun, fun...

He started playing Internet games at a young age. He is now 28, a high school dropout, living with his widowed mother. He has no job. He still plays Internet games... all the time.

The internet is fun.
It really is.
It is the present day 'Tree of knowledge of Good and Evil'. And just like the story goes, we are given everything we need, with a warning about the 'Tree'.
We need to make the right decisions when using the 'Web of Lies', else we'll end up like our ancestors, cast out of paradise and in a situation we really cannot handle.

Stay safe while on the World Wide Web. It only takes a second for things to go horribly wrong.

She sits in front of her unusually pink laptop, typing a warning out to the world. She has entered a contest and is sure she is going to loose for twisting the topic. She is, however, satisfied that she did her part and voiced her opinion. For her, the Internet is Pandora's box, full of surprises. It has given her a say in this world. She smiles to herself.

Yes, the Internet is fun.

A 'Bandh' to 'Bandhs'

Those of you living in the state of Goa, India may have witnessed the bandh held yesterday, June 6th, 2011.
For those of you who are not aware what a 'bandh' is, it means 'closed' in Hindi. It is basically a strike or a protest brought on by political activists wherein the general public are forced to stay in their homes, shopkeepers are not allowed to open their shops and modes of public transport are stopped.

These bandhs are called on by certain parties to get their way by invoking fear in the hearts of the common people. You may wonder how and I'm planning on telling you just that.

3 years ago, when we first arrived in Goa, we were in the dark on such matters, life just seemed fun. But as time went by, the glamor of living in Goa gave way to horror and realization of how things really worked here.

Back to our topic, some days ago, it was announced in the papers that there would be a 'bandh' on the 6th. The reason for this is as follows:

In Goa, there are 2 types of schools- The local schools and the high class schools ( Thats what I had gathered from those who've lived here). The high class schools are horribly expensive and the rich and some medium class people send their children here. The fees charged are somewhere around Rs. 28,000 per year! The local schools ( Village schools) are attended by people who can't afford the luxury of the other schools. The fees here are around Rs. 800 per year. Now the high class schools have English as the medium of instruction whereas local schools have 'Konkani' as their medium ( Konkani is the native language of the Goan people). Sometime ago, it was suggested that with modernization and evolution of the new era, the children who didn't have English as the main medium, faced problems later in life ( College, work opportunities, etc.)

People went about demanding equality for all, an opportunity for English medium for the fortunate and those not so fortunate. It became a topic of discussion everywhere till finally, the Government agreed that Goa did need a change for the better and English won.

Now, a few days back, some political parties came up with a new twist- If English was taught in schools, people wouldn't make much of an effort to learn it at home and eventually, in say 15 years or so, Konkani would die out!

The bandh was held as scheduled to prove their point and we spent the whole of yesterday cooped up in our home, not that we were complaining though  : P   We enjoy holidays  : D

However, after hearing what happened, it became a bigger issue.

Politicians disagree on points and force their opinion on the public without giving them a choice! They say India is a democracy, they say people are free here and have a right to choose what they want out of life. I've come from a country in the Middle East where freedom is not a word commonly heard. How is India different from these countries?? They claim to let people's voice's be heard and some other nonsense I really dont want to go into. So how are they better than the Middle East in terms of freedom?

These parties force people to live in constant fear of being stoned or beaten up. They give no thought to anything, there are no factors, they stone everyone, children, women, old people, the sick, injured, EVERYONE!!!

These people claimed that the bandh held yesterday was a success cos people stayed in, most schools were closed, etc. My question is which mother would allow her child to take the public bus on a day when she knows that crazy people are waiting out there to stone her precious child? No matter how against the bandh people are, no human being values anything more than their life and so, nobody moved out of their houses!

These LUNATICS stoned buses with innocent children in them. I mean, how can have the heart to do something like that? Where is your sense of humanity people???? You'll are so concerned about the future of your language that you'll have lost all concern for the future of the state ( The children).

I personally feel Goa needs to implement English into the schools. I've heard college students struggle to find words to string together to make proper sentences! And these people are the future doctors and engineers of our state, these useless idiots who cant understand text books and who have no idea what is said to them till it is explained in their local language!

English is a universal language, wherever you go, you need it! It is important for communication with the outside world. If you cant speak proper English, how in the world are you living????

Im not against Konkani or anything, I respect the language though I know very little of it, it is a beautiful language and should be kept alive as long as Goans exist. I just feel like Goa needs this to move forward. India has been a developing country for far too long! Indians are smart people and can do wonders but if they cant speak, what good are their brains? I doubt companies want translators along with their employees to translate the Konkani that flows out wonderfully from our mouths!  : P

I think the Shiv Sena or whatever other parties taking part in this should sit and really think about the future of Goa. Soon the beaches will stink and the price of alcohol will rise and then what good will Goa or the Goans be??

We need to take a stand here, we need to fight against these people who terrorize us and force us to become hand puppets in their climb to power!! They cant force their opinions on us!

I love Goa, I want to see it prosper. But if people cant even understand what you say to them half the time, I doubt the future holds anything great for us...

Stand up for what you believe in, only then will life be worth living.

Something to call my Own :D

Its FINALLY done!!!! After hours and hours of nonsense, I've FINALLY managed to make our very own header  : D  : )  : )

We had downloaded the previous header from an online site ( Very generous of them, we owe them loads for giving us something to start with) but somewhere at the back of my head was that nagging thought that somewhere around the globe, someone or 'someones' shared the same header under a different blog name   : o

So after much thought and surfing through the net on 'How to's', this is what I've come up with  : )  Its pretty simple, I know, but its our own and I'm proud of it   : )

Hope you guys like it  : )
